Sense and sensibility – free yourself from vet bills and worry

Dr Anthony Zambelli

BY all accounts, 2016 is going to be a tough year for all of us. I’m a vet, not a politician, so let’s not go into the reasons why. When money is tight, however, all vets will tell you – the animals suffer. People make strange and indefensible choices that vets are too timid to challenge. When a client rolls into the car park in an R800 000 luxury SUV but won’t pay R10 000 for his pet’s treatment (less than a month’s repayments on the car) – you have to ask – is a car worth more than a life? And when people complain about a vet’s charges – but then go on a two-week holiday to Cape Town – again, something is seriously wrong here. On the other hand, a pensioner with fixed income who has seven cats and brings in a rescue but wants a special price from the vet – when did her good deed become the vet’s?

People need to take full and total responsibility for the choices they make, and the obligations they take on – like the TOTAL care of a living, breathing, feeling, loving animal. This means YOU pay the healthcare, feeding, grooming, and yes the medical bills of YOUR pet, and let your vet worry about his or her children, bond, practice loan, drug bills, instrument replacement costs, and so forth.

There is a solution – for about R200-R250 per month your pet’s bills can be paid by a medical aid. There are several out there; your vets can advise you on the most appropriate one for you. You DON’T need DSTV to live; your dog or cat DOES NEED medical cover. You can skip one restaurant meal or bottle of wine or a few boxes of fags a month. Your pet can’t skip having cancer treated, or gastro, or any other disease. Man up and get medical aid. Now. Not tomorrow.
