Shopping tips this Easter holiday

THE Hillcrest police would like to warn the community to be more vigilant and not become victims of pickpocketing and theft, especially while shopping this long weekend.

Police spokesperson for Hillcrest Saps Captain Linzi Smith said that criminals often target shopping malls that are busy and they have easy access to handbags. Criminals also target small businesses when they know they will be paying staff wages.

“These businesses pay their workers directly and they often become targets of criminals. We urge businesses to arrange for their workers’ wages to be paid into their bank accounts.

“It is not advisable to carry large sums of money in public and members of the community need to follow precautionary measures when doing their shopping,” Smith said.

She offered some tips to the community so they can avoid becoming victims.

“Do not let anyone to assist you when you are at the ATM and be aware of your surroundings,” she said.

“Do not leave valuable items in the car like laptops, cash and phones, and when you are locking your car, make sure that you double check that it is properly locked by pulling the handle.”

Smith said that the SAPS is receiving a high volume of cases of people’s cars being remote jammed while they are shopping.

“If you see any suspicious action around shopping centre parking lots, please contact the police immediately before you being a victim of crime,” she said.

To report cases of theft, the SAPS can be contacted at 031 765 9124.
