SPCA staffer completes 1000km for animals

2015-12-15 06:00

SARAH van Heerden, Kloof and Highway SPCA operations manager, crossed the finish line just after 12am Sunday - exhausted and very emotional.

While most of the community were tucked in their warm beds, Heerden was digging deep to motivate and push herself to cross the finish line of the toughest mountain bike race ever - the Munga.

The Munga started on Wednesday, 2 December at 12pm in Bloemfontein, and is five days long for participants to cycle over 1 000kms long to the finish line in Wellington, Western Cape.

She did phenomenally well despite having a bad fall and hitting her knee and head, her Garmin giving up on her and battling with saddles sores, one of which is about half the size of the palm of her hand. Her husband and children were there to welcome her home at the finish line. Cycling alone for five days across 1000km unsupported she did it to make a difference in the lives of animals. Fountain Civil Engineering sponsored an entry for Heerden to complete the toughest race on earth. - Supplied.
