She said often parents take it for granted that their child is safe in a play area, however, it just takes seconds for someone to kidnap a child.

“No one has the right to touch someone else’s child, we need to tell our child if they are not comfortable they should scream for help.

“For teenagers, we can also install apps on their smart phones which can immediately offer assistance in time of need. There are many on the market these days. We must also monitor our children’s phones and who they are interacting with on social media.”

Smith advised the community to find local organsations against human trafficking and volunteer one’s services to them as well.

One such organisation is The Domino Foundation, a non-profit organisation that creates essential structures geared towards supporting people, projects and programmes that are meeting the needs of individuals and communities physically, emotionally, cognitively and spiritually through mercy, justice and empowerment.

One of its programmes, is “Red Light”, an anti-human-trafficking programme, which impacts almost 6 000 lives every day.

“We aim to restore hope and dignity to survivors of human trafficking and sex trafficking. Our programme reaches out to survivors, restores hope and releases ‘freedom warriors’,” said the foundation’s volunteer, Rowan Phillips.

“Red Light’s programmes are centred on love and the Word of God to release our beneficiaries into sustainable lives of freedom and hope.”

He said the community can also play a part in ending this scourge.

“One can offer their time as a volunteer. It is a known fact that volunteers add that ‘something special’ to the work we do and we would be totally lost without them.

“From pouring their hearts out and love on the individual children to being powerful voices advocating our causes, volunteers are invaluable and are much-needed throughout our programmes.

“Currently the #DominoEffect is changing lives and is continued through a number of volunteer options such as ad hoc or a once-off. We host many fund-raisers, sporting events and advocacy opportunities throughout the year and need helping hands for once-off occasions.

“Regular or committed, regular, committed volunteers allow us to plan programme schedules and activities effectively and enables us to add those extra-special touches to our programmes. This involves fitting into a current volunteer roster or assisting at specific prearranged times.

“Community service - we have an exciting packed programme for pupils and students to accumulate hours for school and varsity requirements. With four, and five-day community service work weeks scheduled during the school holidays, students have the option of gaining 100 community service hours.”

Phillips said regarding the the schools programme: “We co-ordinate termly collection drives, fun group activities and opportunities for involvement.”
