Suspects sentenced for rape

A 26-year-old Sphiwe Hlophe was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment by the Camperdown Regional Court following the rape of a 21-year-old girl from Umsunduzi recently.

A rape case was opened at Umsunduzi in October 2016, when a complainant who was on her way to write her first matric exam was accosted by an unknown man who dragged her at knife point into the bushes near Umsunduzi river.

Warrant Officer Sthembiso Xulu investigated the case; he even sought the assistance of the media by circulating an identikit of the then suspect.

After intensive investigation and joint operations with the MEC for Education, the MEC for Community Safety and Liaison and the police the suspect was arrested in Umsunduzi area.

His DNA samples linked him to a 2015 rape case which is still under investigation.

In another incident a 17-year-old boy has been sentenced to five years imprisonment for the rape of a 9-year-old boy.

The two boys were staying in an orphanage in Embo reserve when the incident happened in May 2017.

The accused was convicted by the Pinetown Regional Court. - Supplied.
