THE new Volvo V90 Cross Country is now available in South Africa. Continuing a legacy of Cross Country models that spans 20 years, Volvo Cars’ latest Cross Country is the ultimate culmination of form, function and absolute lifestyle appeal.

The new V90 Cross Country also completes Volvo’s entirely new 90 cluster in South Africa, sharing its Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) with the multi-award-winning new XC90 and S90.

“We know that South African buyers in the premium crossover segment have limited choices, and so we are delighted that the new Volvo V90 Cross Country is now able to cater better for this discerning audience. It is the only crossover in its segment that is available in South Africa, allowing us to continue to lead with a lifestyle enabler that brings all of Volvo’s latest technology and design excellence to the fore,” says Greg Maruszewski, managing director of Volvo Car South Africa.

Available with diesel or petrol drivetrains and all-wheel drive as standard on all models, the new V90 Cross Country epitomises the ultimate premium lifestyle partner and is the spiritual successor to the much-lauded Volvo XC70. A total of eight derivatives are available.

Sharing its design DNA with the new Volvo S90 and V90, the new V90 Cross Country is not just a styling exercise. Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design at Volvo Car Group, says, “It’s not just a ‘plastic job’. With our new Cross Country you can go where a normal sedan or wagon cannot go. Capability in challenging road, track and field conditions, is the essence. So it all starts with the chassis.

“We raised the ground clearance, not just by a few millimetres, but a substantial six centimetres. The tyre diameter has grown by up to 42 mm, providing us with a stable and rugged platform for our design work. To accommodate the bigger wheels, we designed wheel arch extensions. Together with a silk cover and the new front bumper, they protect the new V90 Cross Country in rough terrain. The car has a powerful stance – it radiates the immense capability of its all-wheel drive and the freedom to go wherever you want.”

Volvo’s individual 90 cluster models are differentiated mainly by the detail of their grilles. For the V90 Cross Country, the 23 concave vertical ribs, first seen on the S90, are each accentuated by five metal studs. High-gloss black detailing on the window surrounds also differentiate the Cross Country models.

The purposeful overall design exudes rugged capability in every direction, while maintaining the elegant and stately prowess that was originally imparted by the new S90 on South African roads earlier in 2017.

Ingenlath elaborates: “The new Volvo V90 Cross Country brings a surprising and intriguing combination of exterior and interior design elements together. The interior is a luxurious cocoon, and inviting place with state-of-the-art interaction systems. Its architecture is deeply rooted in our Scandinavian design tradition. Elegance, beautifully-crafted materials and masterfully executed simplicity – these elements define the welcoming, warm atmosphere. By tinting the walnut black, emphasis of the material’s character shifts towards its natural structure – the grain of the wood. We also raised the level of luxurious execution by inventing the “pearl seam”. This beautiful decorative stitching makes an art out of a hand-crafted sewing technique. It is this contrasting combination of a strong, powerful exterior, and a warm, welcoming interior, that gives the Volvo V90 Cross Country such a unique and attractive character.”

With the new V90 Cross Country, customers are also given the option to change the expression of the car by specifying the exterior with a colour-coded execution for the bumpers, wheel arches and side sills. In doing so, the contrast between the functional elements is reduced and the character shifts towards a more discreet, elegant appearance.
