Time for everyone to conserve water

2016-04-26 06:00

TWO weeks ago I spotted water gushing from a fire hydrant while people just drove by, barely even giving the sight a second glance.

Why is everyone so calm when we are in the midst of a drought?

It has come to my attention that some people don’t know how bad our water situation is, and the majority of those who do don’t care.

Saying you care doesn’t prove anything until you make a difference.

If you have not yet made efforts to conserve water, it is time to make an immediate start.

If the warned cuts of 50% have to be implemented, our supply will soon be limited to just a few hours of access to water a day, or our taps will be left with nothing but a trickle.

Although the government is looking into desalination plants in coastal towns, this will take an entire year to establish if implemented.

Therefore, the quickest and most effective solution is not to let a single drop go to waste.

Our current priority should be to fix all leaking pipes and reduce daily water consumption. With no end in sight to the drought, we should start using less water before we have no water at all.
