Tyre theft is on the increase

SA COMMUNITY Crime Watch is warning residents in and around the Upper Highway area that tyre theft is on the increase and they should be cautious about where they park their vehicles.

SACCW founder Steven King said that they have had dozens of incidents where trailer tyres in Waterfall have been stolen and owners need to take it upon themselves to prevent this from happening.

A resident in the Waterfall area, Lynne de Cent, said tyre theft is a very real crisis not only in Waterfall but countrywide.

She said she’s aware of this matter as she is in the logistics industry, “When drivers are asleep, the tyres are stolen from the rear section to be sold cheaply as second-hand tyres or to recycling companies,” said De Cent.

She said that truck drivers need to park in a well-lit area and in a safe and busy area.

Hillcrest SAPS communications officer Captain Linzi Smith confirmed that tyre theft is on the increase: “There was a trend of tyres being stole from trailers and the police are working on calming the situation.”

King said that they are working with a local security company to curb the situation and are appealing to the community for any assistance. “Thorburn and SACCW are investigating the theft and a reward is being offered for information that leads to the arrest and successful conviction of the suspects,” said King. Anyone with information can phone 066 305 8507.
