THE Kloof community are up in arms after a vandal smashed into the “Welcome to Kloof” sign at the Pioneer Road off-ramp last week.

According to Paolo Candotti, Kloof Conservancy chairperson, the tyre tracks are clearly visible and the sign has been partly lifted off the ground.

“It was hit very hard as it is set in two big concrete blocks,” he said.

Paolo said that this is an iconic sign and has welcomed people to Kloof for over 20 years.

“We would really like to find who did this and would welcome any information from the public.”

An outraged resident, Rita Chettiar said that the sign was important to Kloof and anyone who lives in the area or travels through it was always “welcomed” by it.

Chettiar said such vandalism is terrible and the “mindless culprits” need to find something better to do than pick on signs.

“Why do this to our beautiful town? The signs are here for the benefit of the community, not to be vandalised and wrecked,” she added.

“Hopefully this article will alert the community to the need to preserve our environment and to keep an eye open for any signs of vandalism.”

She asked the community to protect the environment for the future generation.

If anyone has information on vandalism or the destroyed “Welcome to Kloof” sign they must contact the Kloof Conservancy via e-mail info@kloofcon servancy.org.za
