Vigilant Pinetown detective ‘saves the day’

TWO suspects aged 20 and 26 were arrested in Pinetown last week at about 5.15pm following a shooting on corner of Chapel and Crompton streets.

According to Pinetown SAPS communication officer Captain BJ Manqele a detective from Pinetown SAPS was driving around the corner of Chapel and Crompton streets in slow-moving traffic when he noticed four firearm- wielding men banging the windows of the Mercedes-Benz in front of him.

He stopped his vehicle and tried to intercept, not knowing the four men would open fire. When the four opened fire on the constable he took cover and reiterated and injured two suspects.

One suspect was injured on his back and could not flee, the second was injured but managed to flee the scene, while the other two escaped.

One suspect was arrested on the scene and the second one was arrested while hiding in a public hospital.

Two 9mm pistols with live rounds of ammunition were recovered from the scene and the suspects were charged with attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Both suspects are in hospital under police guard.

The police are still searching for the remaining two suspects.
