IN an effort to clamp down on the crime hot spots in the Upper Highway area, the Hillcrest SAPS, neighbourhood watches, Metro Police, security companies and community members came together to conduct operational duties on May 25.

The operation focused on all areas affected by “trio crime”, as well as contact crime, property related crime, illegal liquor outlets and crime against women and children.

Hillcrest SAPS communications officer, Captain Linzi Smith, said: “Patrols as well as stop and searches were conducted and we were later joined by the Police Airwing to assist us with eyes in the sky.”

Smith said that this joint operation was a huge success and they are now trying to conduct them on a monthly basis. “Seeing such unity, dedication and commitment like this in making a difference in the community is commendable, which is why it is now going to be done every month to keep our community safe,” said Smith.

SA Community Crime Watch spokesperson Steven King said he is proud of all the roleplayers who participated in the initiative.

“It was an all-round successful day and a special thank you to Watercrest management and staff who supplied us with refreshments for all the operational staff,” said King.
