SARAH Baartman draai in haar graf om as sy moes weet hoe daar baklei word oor wié se verantwoordelikheid die herstel van haar laaste rusplek is.

Haar gedenksteen-graf in Hankey is meer as twee maande gelede met verf ontsier, maar stééds nie skoongemaak nie.

Volgens Laura-Leigh Randall, woordvoerder van die Kouga-munisipaliteit, het hulle reeds dié ontsiering by die Suid-Afrikaanse Erfenishulpbronagentskap (SAEHA) aangemeld.

Maar Gregg Onthong, ’n bestuurder by die SAEHA, meen die skoonmaak van die terrein is die munisipaliteit se verantwoordelikheid.

“Die graf is wel onder jurisdiksie van die Departement van Kuns en Kultuur, maar die Kouga-munisipaliteit is verantwoordelik vir die skoonmaak daarvan.

“Ons het intussen ’n brief aan die departement (van Kuns en Kultuur) gerig wat vra dat die graf herstel word, ook dat dit met beter sekuriteit toegerus kan word sodat vandale nie weer toeslaan nie. As alles goed verloop, kan die herstelproses én die omheining daarvan dalk in Augustus begin,” sê Onthong.

Volgens lt.kol. Ezrah Sefaley, polisiewoordvoerder, is niemand nog in hegtenis geneem weens die beskadiging van die graf nie.
