JBay Open - trip down memory lane Past Jeffreys Bay Champions:

2015-06-11 06:01

JEFFREYS Bay has been accorded iconic status in the world of surfing since it was discovered in the 1960s.

Supertubes has been regarded as the finest right hand point break in the world for over 50 years with surfers from all over the planet making the pilgrimage to South Africa to ride its fabled barrels.

The first international surf contest was held in 1981 and was called the Beach Hotel Classic, which was won by South Africa’s first world champion, Shaun Tomson.

Over the past 35 years, most of the big names in surfing have competed in Jeffreys Bay, with the benchmark being set in 1984 by Marc Occhilupo a youngster from Australia, who was sponsored by Billabong, the grass roots surf brand founded by Gordon Merchant.

Occhilupo defined how Supertubes should be surfed by goofy footers when he won the Country Feeling Surf Classic way back in ‘84.

The event was then upgraded to Billabong Pro and became a WSL contest in 1996, which was won by Kelly Slater.

The Billabong Pro became one of the most popular events on the WSL Tour and many epic battles took place in the fabled Supertubes line up.

Andy Irons, Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson and South African Jordy Smith have all won titles in Jeffreys Bay.

The event was rebranded as the JBay Open of Surfing in 2013, following the demise of the Billabong Pro and in 2014 became the only WSL sanctioned Championship Tour event on the African continent.

The JBay Open is also sanctioned by Surf South Africa, Sascoc, EP Surfing Council and has the support of the Kouga Municipality.
