THE open water swim season will start in November as swimmers gear up for an action packed summer.

The first event will take place at the world class open water swim venue of Marina Martinique on November 15.

The distances that can be swum are 10km, 5km, 3km, 1km, 500m and a bank-to-bank swim for u.10 swimmers who are trying out open water.

The event will be swum according to World Open Water Swim Association guidelines, which means that wetsuit swimmers will be catered for, as well as swimmers who wear the traditional Speedo type costumes.

The next event will take place on November 29 with a different format.

Some 4km, 2km, 1km, 500m and bank-to-bank swim distances will be available at Marina Martinique.

These distances will suit all Iron Man and half Iron Man athletes and will be swum over a 1km route.

The premier event of the season – the Marina Mile - presented by Nicholas Melck will takes place on December 13. The traditional Mile will be swum, as well as a Double Mile, 500m and bank-to-bank swims.

“Open water swimming is growing and the Marina is regarded as one of the best swim venues in the world,” says organiser Brenton Williams.

“This season we will offer distances aimed at supporting the Iron Man and Half Iron Man athletes who swim 2km and 4 km in their respective races. We will also be catering for the swimmers who swim according to Channel Rules, which means wearing nothing more than a Speedo type costume, goggles and a swim cap.”

Entries for all the events are open at

Open water swim training started this week at Marina Martinique. Training sessions take place from the Marina Wharf restaurant at 17:45 every Tuesday and Thursday.
