Over 3?000 RDP houses get green light

2015-04-30 17:16

OVER 3 000 RDP houses will be construc-ted in the Kouga region before the end of the year.

First on the cards is Kruisfontein in Humansdorp which will be home to 391 hou-ses. Construction is set to commence in June.

This project will be followed by the construction of 220 houses in Pellsrus, Jeffreys Bay in September.

Ocean View residents will witness the rise of 1 500 houses in November this year.

“In order to address the shortage of land for human settlement development in Jeffreys Bay, two pieces of land have been identified for purchase by the Department of Human Settlements and Department of Rural Development and Land Affairs respectively,” says Kouga mayor Booi Koerat.

According to Koerat the building of RDP houses was delayed for many years, due to insufficient water and sewerage bulk infrastructure. This, however, is now something of the past as funding to the tune of R117-million has been secured for nine bulk infrastructure projects which is set to be completed in next month or two.

Construction on a further two projects is set to break ground next year. The construction of 732 and 278 houses for Hankey and Patensie respectively is scheduled for August 2016.

“Also in the pipeline is the upgrade of the water reservoir at Weston at a cost of R2.24 million to allow for the building of 400 RDP house, including the upgrade of mud houses in the area,” says Koerat
