FOUNTAINS Mall will be a hive of fast action-packed entertainment on Saturday, October 3 when the Algoa Rally 50k regional rally championship descents on Jeffreys Bay.

Spectators can view the drivers performing with precision and accuracy, negotiating corners at high speed with squealing tyres and avoiding obstacles placed at strategic places in the parking area which will form the course for the day.

While the stage at Fountains Mall is tight and technical and requires focus from both driver and navigator, the alternative gravel stages will provide high speed action. The gravel stages can be viewed along the Swartrivier Road, starting at the R102 turn-off that runs past Fountains Mall to the Kabeljauws River. From there it continues to Zuurbron and comes to a halt at Spekboom Road in Melon. Spectators can view the gravel stages across the dam from the deck at the Spekboom Lapa Restaurant.

Leading contenders for the championship are Johan and Juané Viljoen - father and daughter driver and navigator - competing in an evergreen 2lt Volkswagen Golf, followed by local Jeffreys Bay aces Neels and Jan Vosloo with respective navigators Kevin Futcher and Ria Jansen driving Toyota Yaris’.

Competitors with a chance to win the event are Bryan Heine (Nissan SSS), Darren and Gavin Murphy (VW 2lt Golf) and a contingent of Volkswagen Polo’s driven by Ross Bartle, Rufus Neethling Rikus Schmidt and Jacques Louw.

Class winners and event contenders are Ashley Bezuidenout, Stephno Pieterse and Ruan Gerber. The dark horses could be Chris Johnson and Denzo Ferreira from Joubertina.

Supporting events include drifting by Wayne Smith and displays of new car specials which will keep the spectators entertained.

Air support will be provided by Megan Heine, one of last year’s lady drivers.

The rally will gear into action at the Wimpy for documentation at 08:30, with the first rally car entering the state at 10:00.
