OPEN water swimmers are gearing up for the Infood Blu Cold Water Classic at Marina Martinique this Saturday.

With the strong winds and cold weather, the water temperature has dropped to 13 degrees Celsius, which is exactly what the South African extreme swimmers want, as cold water is defined as being sub 15 degrees in the swimming fraternity.

South Africa’s only triple crown swimmers Roger Finch has entered the 7.5km event and will be attempting to complete the Cold Water Classic wearing nothing but a speedo type costume, goggles and a swim cap.

The triple crown comprises of the English Channel, the Catalina Channel and around Manhattan Island - all swims are about 34km in distance.

Finch regularly does Robben island crossings in preparation for his big swims and is no stranger to cold water.

He has also done training swims in Marina Martinique and took part in the 12 hours in 12 miles swim in Jeffreys Bay in March.

Last year’s winner Rebecca Newman will be back to defend her Infood Blu Cold Water Classic title and to gain further experience in chilly water, as she has her sights on completing a Robben Island swim in the not too distant future.

Kendal Wright, who has completed a Cape St Francis , as well as a Robben Island and Cape Point is a confirmed entry, as is PJ Duffy, who will be determined to add the Cold Water Classic title to his impressive list of swim accomplishments, which include winning the Shipwreck swim in Cape Town.

The first South African male to complete an English Channel crossing Peter Bales, will be officiating the Cold Water Classic.

Bales is also the Chairman of the Cape Long Distance Swim Association, the body that sanctions all ocean swims of 7.5km and longer in South Africa.

The Cold Water Classic starts at 08:30 am and 2.5km, 5km and 7.5km swims are on offer
