Transfer station for St Francis Bay

2015-04-30 17:14

A TRANSFER station is on the cards for St Francis Bay, while landfill sites in the Kouga region will be upgraded at a cost of R25 million in the new financial year.

This forms part of the Kouga Municipality’s Kouga Waste Management and Recycling Project, which will be implemented in the 2015/2016 financial year, starting July.

St Francis Bay will soon be home to a transfer station.

According to Kouga municipal spokesperson, Mfundo Sobele, a transfer station will be constructed in St Francis Bay to make provision for a temporary base of waste disposal as the proper landfill site in Humansdorp is too far from the community of the town.

“The current site in St Francis Bay does not meet standards to be a landfill site according to legislation and the municipality has secured a closing permit from the Department of Environmental Affairs,” says Sobele.

“Once this is done, there must be another provision for disposal of waste which is where we are headed with the landfill site.”

The Humansdorp and Hankey landfill sites will boast new security fencing, guard houses and a new waste cell. A weigh bridge will furthermore be installed at the Humansdorp landfill site in order to move to an electronic waste recording system
