The South African National Blood Service in Port Elizabeth has made an urgent call to donors to come forward as it has less than two days of stock available.

It said it barely survived the Easter weekend and only 1.7 days blood stock were now available.

“Although we ‘survived’ the past long weekend in terms of being able to supply blood to hospitals throughout the country, we are not in a desirable position in terms of our current blood stock level,” SANBS spokesman Maryke Harris said.

The SANBS needed to maintain a blood stock level of five days at all times by collecting 3000 units of blood a day to meet the needs of the thousands of patients who were reliant on blood transfusions for their survival.

“It is only with the help of the selfless blood donors that we are able to improve the situation,’ she said.

They were encouraging all regular and prospective donors to donate blood as soon as possible.

To become a blood donor, you must be between the ages of 16 and 65, weigh 50kg or more, be in good health

and lead a sexually safe lifestyle.
