SHE might only be 9-years old, but Jefrreys Bay swimmer Abreilla Bredell already dreams of swimming the Robben Island Channel.Abriella, a learner at Victory Christian School in Jeffreys Bay, recently competed in a C-league gala event in Port Elizabeth where she won two of her races. She has been training at Brenton’s Swim School since she was two years old.Just why does she love swimming so much? “I am a very competitive person and enjoy swimming races against other people and improving my times. I like learning new things, keeping fit and taking care of my body. Swimming does all of the above for me,” says Abriella who also does open water swimming at Marina Martinique. When asked if it was scary swimming the 500m when she was just 8 years old, Abriella said it wasn’t too scary and that she is going to move up to the 1km swim as soon as she has the 500m sorted.Abriella’s ultimate goal in swimming is to practise hard and to swim the Robben Island Channel with her coach Brenton Williams. Her favourite stroke is butterfly, but she thinks her first Robben Island crossing will be freestyle. “I have started to surf in cold water, so think I will be able to swim Robben Island once I am a bit older and have practised more in Marina Martinqiue,” says Abriella.
