Bathers urged to observe safety measures

BEACHGOERS are asked to be extra vigilant and to take all safety precautions as the Kouga Municipality strives for a summer season without incidents.

Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen said though the municipality will be having safety and security personnel at popular spots along the coastline, beachgoers still had a major role to play in ensuring their own safety.

“We will be having a total of 47 lifeguards for the season across our beaches, with nine stationed at the Blue Flag beach.

“We do, however, want to appeal to our residents and visitors alike to take heed of safety measures when going to the beach,” she said.

Van Lingen said some of the major risks included adults letting minors go into the water alone or people bathing while under the influence of alcohol.

“We would also like to appeal to everyone to work with the lifeguards in situations where everyone is instructed to leave the water in view of looming danger.

“Our lifeguards have every bather’s safety at heart and they will never lead you astray,” said the Mayor.

She added that law-enforcement officers will also be on the lookout for infringements of municipal by-laws, in making this a safe and enjoyable festive season.
