THE fires are lit, the cameras are rolling, the presenter is waiting in anticipation as the contestants make their way to the front . . .

Cut! Cut! Something is not right. The contestant must go outside and start all over. This time they walk in from the other side, but . . . cut . . . cut . . . This angle is not working for the producer. Back outside again it is.

They walk in for the third time . . . this time they receive thumbs up.

Then it is time to braai.

Die Walskipper Restaurant in Jeffreys Bay recently played host to the internationally acclaimed South African television show, the Ultimate Braai Master - filming one of the episodes for season five.

What the specific challenge was, is still a secret. All we know is that it was an elimination round between two all-female teams. The contestants had to braai wors and pork, besides other meat.

This multiple award-winning reality TV show, created by Cooked in Africa Films and hosted by SA celebrity bush cook Justin Bonello, included various destinations in Kouga on their braai journey across South Africa.

Apart from Die Walskipper the Ultimate Braai Master team put their braai skills to the test at the Cape St Francis Resort and Gamtoos River.

“A huge draw to this area was Die Walskipper itself. Look at it. It is magnificent. We believe that Die Walskipper represents the Kouga region perfectly. Gorgeous setting, relaxed and unpretentious, family friendly, and, of course, who can beat that ocean view,” says Bela Pechau from Cooked in Africa Films.

“When the Cape St Francis Resort said that the crew would be welcome to stay there, the decision was easy.

“The Ultimate Braai Master aims not only to put phenomenal chefs against one another, but also to showcase the raw, natural beauty of South Africa. The Kouga region is phenomenal and boasts so much diversity in terms of landscapes. From the ocean and beach views to the wind turbines through the farm lands, this region has an excellent combination, which makes our job of capturing the essence of nature in South Africa very easy.”

Who will be the judge?

Alongside outdoor enthusiast, chef and host Justin Bonel-lo, Kitchen Cowboy himself, Pete Goffe-Wood, is on the judges panel and the Tsogo Sun’s very own executive chef, Benny Masekwameng. Both personalities are familiar faces in television and culinary circles.

As part of a new and exciting format, this year’s prizes are bigger and better than ever before with over R1 000 000 in prizes at stake. The main haul for first place includes:

  • R400 000 in cash
  • R200 000 in the form of vouchers from our new food sponsor Game Stores
  • A brand new Suzuki Grand Vitara
  • And a host of other prizes that will be revealed in the show.

The fifth season of Ultimate Braai Master starts on e-TV in February 2017.
