ONE of the biggest challenges facing Council and communities is the prolonged drought and looming water shortages.

Water restrictions and punitive tariffs were first introduced in December 2016, along with a target consumption decrease of 15%.

On 31 May 2017 the Council declared a local state of disaster because of the prevailing drought. The declaration will allow the municipality to apply for funding from provincial and national government to implement a drought emergency action plan.

The plan focuses on conserving water and securing alternative sources, including extra boreholes, the recycling of waste water and a desalination plant.

Even higher punitive tariffs and a target decrease of 25% in water consumption are to be implemented from August 2017.
