Donation to help local brick-makers make it big

A Jeffreys Bay brick-making co-operative has received a major boost towards realising their dream of making it big in the business.

The Do It Well cooperative, from Ocean View, are now ready to start plying their trade after local firm Vlakteplaas Quarry donated a truck-load each of requisite grit and sand to the group on Monday (February 13).

The ambitious five-member team also recently received 50 bags of cement as start-up assistance from the Kouga Municipality’s Local Economic Development (LED) section.

This follows last year’s completion of a lease agreement for an operation site in Ocean View between the two parties and the municipality’s donation of a container to the group.

The co-op has been under Kouga’s wing since its inception, as part of the municipality’s programme of assisting Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) develops into self-sustainable businesses.

Through facilitation by LED, they were able to get a donation of a state-of-the-art brick-making machine from the Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform (DRDAR) in 2013 but lacked basic skills on how to operate the machine.

This is when Vlakteplaas intervened, as part of their social responsibility, by adopting the group. They took them through basic, yet intensive, training on the physical aspects of brick-making.

At the hand-over of the sand and grit Kouga LED Portfolio Councillor Bryan Dhludhlu congratulated the group for their perseverance and wished them well in their business.

“We have been with you throughout this journey, but it’s time for you to show what you are made of. We will still be available for assistance, but we expect you to make this business thrive and to be an example to others that you can and will be sustainable,” he said.

Vlakteplaas Quarry’s Tanya Keyzer said she couldn’t wait to see the members put all that they had learnt into practice.

Speaking on behalf of Do It Well, co-op member Ayanda Madwara thanked both the municipality and Vlakteplaas for the assistance and faith invested in them.

The other members of the co-operative are Sinoxolo Higa, Thanduxolo Oliphant, Peter Wild and Pamela Ngquwe.
