SAFPA (South African Fancy Pigeon Association) was founded in 1943, with the sole purpose to promote the fancy pigeon sport in South Africa. This organization is divided in provincial regions that host host annual shows.

The SA Championship Show rotates between the regions and takes place during early July.

The keeping of Fancy pigeons as a hobby exits in many forms. Pigeons are linked to humans since ancient times. Already by the year 3200BC pigeons were kept in Egypt for meat purposes, as well as used as messengers. The European Rock Pigeon is regarded as the forefather of all domesticated pigeons. Despite having one ancestor, a large variety of hundreds of breeds originated in many countries due to various mutants in colour, pattern, form, behavior, voice, manner of flight and ornaments. It is quite possible that more than 1000 different breeds exist that all form part of the species Columba livia.

Feed mixtures for fancy pigeons consisting of maize, peas, sorghum, barley and other seedsand are available in the retail trade. Balanced pellets can also be bought. Fresh clean water should be provided daily, as well as mineral mixtures and seashell grit. Soluble vitamins can be added to the drinking water once a week. If there is no over-crowding; the lofts are kept clean; a quality feed mixture is given; fresh water is available and annual inoculations is done for the most important diseases pigeons should be in good health.

Beginners are advised to select a breed with a tame nature. Stick with clean leg breeds with normal beak lengths. Breeds with abnormal ornaments (crest and muffs); as well as breeds with very short beaks should be left to the experience fancier. Guard against the urge to start off with too many breeds. Try to visit a number of shows and breeders before you make your choice.
