THURSDAY February 4 marked another milestone in the history for Media 24, with the first publication of their brand-new free local newspaper, the Queenstown Express.

Making this even more significant is the fact that the media house is investing in a print edition at a time when print media is increasingly under pressure globally.

“This is testimony to the popularity and success of the Express brand of local newspapers, which has been a favourite read in people’s homes since the first edition of Port Elizabeth Express was published in November 1983 – more than 32 years ago,” said Bettie Giliomee, regional editor of EP Media and editor of Queenstown Express.

Queenstown Express will be distri-buted to 20 000 homes in Queenstown every Thursday.

The launch of the newspaper was celebrated at a special function at the Heritage Guest House in Queenstown on Wednesday, February 3. The event was attended by key roleplayers in the Queenstown community.

Staff of the paper took to the town’s streets on the launch day to hand out newspapers. A cake cutting ceremony was held in the centre of town and was attended by the town’s former acting mayor and portfolio head of the technical services department, Mzolisi Gwantshu.

The newspaper has a staff of four, two reporters and two advertising representatives, who are based at the newspaper’s offices in Queenstown. Production and printing of the Queenstown Express is done in Port Elizabeth.

. EP Media is part of Media 24 and publishes 7 local newspapers throughout the Eastern Cape. A total of 310 000 free copies of Express newspapers, i.e.Port Elizabeth Express, Express Indaba, Kouga Express, UD News, Mthatha Express, Isolomzi Express and Uvo-Lwethu Express, are distributed every week, door to door.
