THE summer holiday is in full swing following the official Kouga Opening of the Season this week.

Thousands of locals and visitors flocked to Jeffreys Bay’s main beachfront on Monday for the event, which included the first-ever laser show for the region.

“Our aim is to turn Kouga into the Events Capital of South Africa and this year’s Opening of the Season proved that we are on track to achieve that goal,” said Executive Mayor Horatio Hendricks.

A highlight of the day was the official switching on of the festive lights.

“While the switch-on took place in Jeffreys Bay, we are excited that we were also able to put up lights in Humansdorp this year,” he said.

“Eskom has further given us the go-ahead to put up lights at Hankey as well.”

He said the municipality would be adding to its collection of festive lights in the years to come, so as to ensure bigger and brighter displays in all towns each December.

There were plenty of free activities for children at the Opening of Season, including face-painting, jumping castles and photo opportunities with Father Christmas.

The second Kouga Mayoral Talent Search took centre stage during the afternoon, with Nicolene winning the solo category, The Goodness taking first place in the group category, Ghetto Prophet scooping the rap category and Break Squad crowning the top dance act.

As the sun set over the bay, holidaymakers were treated to soulful jazz tunes by Humansdorp group Divine Perspective.

The Opening of Season Co-lour Run further added loads of fun to the programme, with helicopter pilot Myburgh Theron from Bloemfontein crossing the finish line first.

“We are very grateful to everyone who partnered with us to make the event a success and look forward to a fantastic festive season,” he said.
