Fire damages houses, guts informal dwellings at Ocean View

2017-06-08 06:01

FOUR RDP houses were damaged and about a dozen informal dwellings gutted when a fire broke out at Ocean View, Jeffreys Bay, on Tuesday evening.

Kouga Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen says the fire, in Griffith Mxenge Street, was reported to the municipa-lity’s Fire Department at 17:16.

Fire-fighters from the Jeffreys Bay station were on the scene within five minutes. Back-up from Humansdorp was also dispatched.

The blaze was extinguished by 18:35, but the Jeffreys Bay crew remained on the scene to do mop-up work and ensure the fire didn’t flare up again.

The Mayor says the Council was grateful that no-one was hurt in the blaze.

“We would, however, like to express our condolences to those households that were affected by the fire. It is devastating to lose one’s possessions and shelter in this way. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”

It is suspected that the fire could have started at an electricity box, but the cause has yet to be confirmed.
