Firms scoop tourism awards

THE Chokka Trail, Stormsriver Adventures (Tsitsikamma Canopy Tours) and the Cape St Francis Resort are the cat’s whiskers when it comes to tourism.

This local adventure initiative, adrenaline-filled organisation and top-class accommodation establishment scooped three major national tourism awards at the recent national 2016 Lilizela Tourism Awards - placing the Kouga and Tsitsikamma firmly on the tourism adventure map of South Africa.

The Chokka Trail in St Francis Bay, headed by Esti Stewart, took top honours with the trail being voted the Best Visitor Experience of the Year in the Beach Experience Category.

Eastern Cape operator Stormsriver Adventures received the BBEE Award for qualifying small enterprises, while the Cape St Francis Resort was honoured as the best five-star self-catering establishment, Beach Break.

“We are very proud that we won purely on the judge’s vote,” says Stewart. “Tripadvisor contributes to a large extent to your overall rating at the awards; however, hikers do not use Tripadvisor. I also do not believe in begging for votes from the public. Thus, I really did not think that we would come out top.

“A national Lilizela award opens many doors, especially to the international market. We are over the moon to know our product contributes to putting the Kouga on the map.”

Stormsriver Adventures CEO, Ashley Wentworth, says, “Eighteen years of dedication to responsible tourism by the team and Managing Director Anneline Wyatt have culminated in this fantastic accolade.

“The operating company is now 48% employee owned endorsing our commitment to transformation. The company will continue to champion the principles of responsible tourism under the strong leadership of Wyatt and her dedicated team.”

  • The Lilizela Tourism Awards is a national government initiative aimed at promoting tourism transformation, service excellence, entrepreneurship, and thriving and sustainable tourism. The awards are a platform to re-cognise and celebrate tourism players and businesses that work passionately to make the Eastern Cape a preferred tourist destination.

The awards also profile milestones of the tourism sector, while putting its challenges to the fore, for collective address and resolutions.
