CRAFT BEER fans can now raise their glasses as the first micro-brewery in Jeffreys Bay is set to open its doors on Monday, 21 November.

Years of planning, research, testing and fine-tuning, has finally come to fruition as Brewhaha Jbay at 20 Da Gama Road will officially start selling their brews - ushering in the brewery business to Jeffreys Bay.

Owned by partners Marius Deetlefs (brewer), Matthys Gerber, and Francois Labuschagne, who areincidentally also owners of Global Junction Cafe in Fountains Mall, the three are ecstatic to finally be opening their doors - after waiting an entire year for their license, and receiving it only one month ago. Brewhaha - originally spelled brouhaha - means a noisy and over-excited reaction or response to something. And this is exactly the response the three partners hope their new business will elicit from locals and visitors alike.

Where did it all start?

Deetlefs fell in love with good quality craft beer while working in the States some years back. Over the years he has dedicated endless time and effort to research on beer brewing before he came to the right styles for Brewhaha. It was his passion and desire to be the very first micro-brewery in Jeffrey’s Bay.

He gained invaluable experience and information from Ronald McClelland from Lions River Brewery in Kwazulu - Natal and Kevin Robertson from Robertson Brewery in George.

Deetlefs will be introducing eight of his own locally brewed craft beers, of which four will be available when Brewhaha opens it’s doors on Monday: his Blond Ale, German Festive Ale, American Wheat Beer, and his African Pale Ale.

According to Deetlefs his beer is unique to Jeffreys Bay and every beer tells a story.

What makes the craft beer at Brewhaha stand out is Deetlefs’ pure love and passion for beer brewing, his attention to every detail of creating good quality beer, from choosing the finest imported and local ingredients to the quality, style and technique in brewing his beer. Deetlefs says his wife Jodi is the creative mind behind the unique industrial look and feel of Brewhaha’s Da Gama Tap Room.

The food, set to compliment the beer, will be American style food: Big burgers, wings, baskets, ribs and several in-house sauces.

Beer will star in several dishes, and be infused into their signature sauces.

Unique to Brewhaha, they will also serve beer samplers that include food that compliments the flavour of each beer - similar to that of wine and food pairings.

Brewhaha boasts family oriented values. All three partners have small children themselves, and believe that having a fun, safe environment for the kids to play is important. Aside from a fun kid’s playroom called “Little Hops”, there will also be a brewer’s corner where Deetlefs will occasionally be available to talk about his craft beer, and a cosy coffee lounge complete with a fireplace for those cold winter evenings. Brewhaha’s motto is “Living the Hoppy Life” which is exactly what they plan to do come Monday.
