REEL up for three days of fishing action in the Gamtoos Valley this weekend.

The 31st Gam 1 000 Angling Competition, hosted by the Gamtoos Angling Cub, will cast off at the Gamtoos Ferry Hotel situated between Jeffreys Bay and Thornhill, from September 21 to 23. The competition format will be that of catch-and-release.

Officials will be on the water for measure and release only. No fish will be weighed.

“Anglers can take photos of smaller fish caught, while bigger fish - for example a kabeljou measuring 90cm or bigger, or a tiger of 60cm - must be measured by one of the officials on site,” says organiser Joseph le Roux.

The winner will walk away with R10 000 and the runner-up with R5 000, while the angler placed third will receive R3 000.

The entry fee is R200 per angler and R100 for participants under 18 years. Juniors will not be entitled for the main prizes.

All anglers must be entered prior to the event.

Registration takes place at the Ferry Hotel at 07:00 on Saturday, September 21, while a compulsory Skippers’ meeting will be held at the hotel at 14:00, followed by the start of the competition at 15:00.

The competition comes to a close at 08:00 on Monday, September 23, followed by the official prize-giving at 12:00.

The prize-giving will take place on Monday, September 23. Breakfast, hamburgers and chips will be on sale for the duration of the competition.
