Hankey prepares for annual dry period

2017-06-08 06:00

HANKEY and Patensie residents are advised that the annual “dry period” for the town has been set for June 17 to July 2.

The “dry period” takes place annually when the Gamtoos Irrigation Board closes off the irrigation canals for maintenance.

Kouga Infrastructure, Planning and Development Portfolio Councillor Desmond Petersen said the towns of Hankey and Patensie receive water for domestic use from the Gamtoos irrigation scheme.

“As a result, their annual maintenance period impacts on the availability of domestic water to households and businesses,” he explains. He says that water restrictions were already in place due to the ongoing drought but cautions that adherence to the restrictions would be more important than ever du-ring the dry period.

“We ask that residents and businesses make an extra effort to save water over this period, from midnight on June 16 to midnight on July 3,” says Petersen.

“Under normal rainfall conditions, water is extracted from the Klein River and pumped to the water treatment works. This is the only alternative water source for these towns.

“Due to the abnormally low rainfall, the flow in the river is low and the water quality is extremely poor. We would, therefore, like to avoid making use of this water and will instead be delivering water to affected communities.
