FOURTEEN days, seven action-packed events, iconic athletes and top-class musicians - the annual JBay Winterfest is set to take over the town in two months.Now in its sixth year, the annual JBay Winterfest will take over Jeffreys Bay and surrounding areas from July 2 to 17.The exciting line-up, boasting a new look and feel, taps into the festival mood with some bold new events on the calendar, as well as refreshingly different formats for some existing events.Festivalgoers can look forward to the Corona Open Jbay Men and Women event - which sees a welcome return for the women after nearly two decades without a premier event at Jeffreys Bay. The inclusion of the women’s event brings the total Corona Open JBay prize-pool to a staggering R10 million.Also on the festival menu is the star-studded Oakley X-Over, the adrenaline-packed Funduro, JBay Windfarm MTB Classic, Endurade JBay X-Trail Run, Colwater Classic and Skins Fishing Competition.Excluded from this year’s festival, is the colourful Kite Festival and the JBay Loggers Classic. Corona Open JBay The JBay Winterfest is anchored by the Corona Open JBay Men’s and Women’s Championship Tour (CT) surfing event at Supertubes. Top-class surfers John John Florence, Kelly Slater, Jordy Smith, Filipe Toledo and tour rookie Mikey February will battle it out to be crowned the ultimate winner.Step Gilmore, Carissa Moore, Lakey Peterson and Tatiana Weston-Web will take to the waves in the women’s event.The waiting period for the two events are from July 2 to 16. Oakley X-Over The Oakley X-Over will see celebrities Jean de Villiers, Butch James, Tonderai Chavhanga, Garreth McClellan, Ruan de Smidt and John Smit put their gold, mountain biking and surfing skills to the ultimate test.The event will take place on July 5 and 6. Funduro Slake Adventures will host their fifth JBay Winterfest Funduro on July 7.The main loop consists of 15km single track and is measured as easy-medium in difficulty. The terrain will consist of both flat and technical riding, while the new terrain promises super fun and some surpri-ses. JBay Windfarm MTB Classic Established as one of the top events on the Eastern Cape off-road calendar, the JBay Windfarm MTB Classic promises to be a highlight of the JBay Winterfest.Over the past five years, organisers of the event worked each year to innovate and improve both the routes and rider experience.The event will leave the starting blocks on July 14. Endurade JBay X-Trail Run The Endurade JBay X-Trail Run is unique in concept, entailing three individual 20km trail runs - all starting 12 hours apart. The total distance covered will be just over 60km.A 10km trail run and 5km fun beach run will take place at 09:00 and 10:00 respectively on July 15. The main event will take place from July 13 to 15. Coldwater Classic Swimmers can experience the thrill and challenge of swimming a triple mile in sub- 15 degree water - wearing only a speedo type costume, goggles and silicone swim cap.The event takes place on July 8. Skins Fishing Competition The sixth Skins Winterfest Competition is set to take place on July 14.The event is divided into six mini-competitions (skins) - each lasting one hour. The contestant who catches the highest-scoring fish for that hour, will win R3 000 cash. If no fish is recorded for any skin, the cash prize, as well as any other prizes, will carry on to the next skin.
