JEFFREYS Bay has won the Kwêla Town of the Year competition for 2018.

The popular holiday town was announced the winner of the competition on 17 June. The main prize is R1-million’s worth of free television advertising and a celebratory festival in September.

Kouga Mayor Horatio Hendricks attributed the win to the people of the town.

“J’Bay may have the best waves in the world, but that’s not why we won. We won because of the town’s people, who are warm and welcoming, and the atmosphere they create here.”

He said the victory showed what could be achieved if people worked together.

“People from all walks of life took hands to make this happen. It shows that, as a town and the broader Kouga community, we are better together than we are apart.”

The win was also a bittersweet moment for him as the campaign was started by his predecessor, Elza van Lingen.

Van Lingen, who was elected as Mayor in 2016, died of cancer in April, only two weeks after she took part in the filming of a segment on Jeffreys Bay for the Kwêla competition.

“It was her dream that Kouga would be the best municipality in South Africa. This is a big step in the right direction and I am certain she is smiling down from heaven on us.”

J’Bay was one of nine finalists from South Africa and Namibia. The other finalists were Montagu in the Western Cape, Parys in the Free State, Fochville in Gauteng, Wakkerstroom in Mpumalanga, Modimolle in Limpopo, St Lucia in KwaZulu-Natal and Mariental in Namibia.
