HARDSHIP, abuse, sheer determination and unwavering faith . . . and, at last, success.

Six years and three distinctions later, Keanu Horn from Pellsrus in Jeffreys Bay is a thriving music student at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth.

Not even years of hardship and verbal and mental abuse could keep him from dreaming big, and most important of all, working hard to realise that dream.

Unhappy and depressed at primary school and longing for a more positive and inspirational environment, Horn could not wait for Tuesday afternoons - that is when the Sunshine Team comes together.

Led by life coach and spiritual mentor, Michelle Dorfling from Joshua Project, the Sunshine Team is a group of young, motivated teenagers who meet weekly to talk about real life issues and how they can help one another when facing difficult situations, says Horn.

“I first joined the group six years ago. That was the day my life started to change for the better. The fellowship we had as a group was what kept me going,” says Horn.

One day they were talking about what high school they would attend. Without a doubt, Horn knew he wanted to attend Global Leadership Academy.

There was only one problem: money.

Not giving up so easily, Horn applied for Joshua Project’s Sponsor a Child Programme, a programme run by Joshua Project to help improve the lives of young people in the community.

And he was successful.

“Then and there my whole life changed.”

According to Dorfling, all learners who are considered for a sponsorship at Joshua Project, have to submit and drive their motivation to be sponsored personally and have to adhere to strict requirements as prescribed by Joshua Project’s Sponsor a Child policy as to ensure accountability - both on the part of the learner and the sponsor.

“All learners considered also have to be regularly part of Joshua Project’s programmes provided daily to assist learners with homework and school projects. Learners with whom we have a relationship, are considered for sponsorship based on their marks, and a written motivation from themselves and their parents.”

Securing three distinctions, Horn matriculated with a Bachelors Degree.

He is currently being sponsored to study music at NMMU - the first sponsored learner off to university.

“None of this would have been possible without the help of Joshua Project and my sponsor, Strato IT Group,” says Horn.

“I believe that God sends certain people on your path to make a change in our life. I want to be that certain person for another human being as well.

“Joshua Project taught me lessons that I will never forget. They opened my eyes to a world where I could strive and be happy. I cannot thank enough the people that put an effort into my life and my future.”

Horn’s message to young, struggling learners is, “anything is possible. Do not be afraid to pursue your dreams. A miracle just may come your way.

“The Joshua Project team teaches us the doctrine of Jeremiah 29:11 - For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

“This is all the confirmation we need to be successful in life.”
