RESIDENTS of Koomansbos and Hermanuskraal in the Koukamma Municipality now have for the first time ever access to electricity after a deal was clinched with Eskom to have the area lit by the end of this month.

These informal settlements have had no electricity since their establishment more than 50 years ago.

According to Koukamma Local Municipality Mayor Sam Vuso, this is a huge development for the area. “Community members will no longer have to walk long distances in the dark. This was a serious problem as they run the risk of becoming victims of rape and robbery.”

According to resident John Asia (71), whose dream it was to see the area electrified before he passed away, they will now be able to have a fridge and television.

“Previously we had to apply for a permit to collect wood in the nearby forest so that we can cook.”
