Kruisfontein Adventures ready to go places

2016-09-29 06:00

EXPLORE Kruisfontein - Humansdorp’s hidden gem - on foot or mountain bike, mount your horse or gear up your quad bike and head for the beautiful mountains for an unforgettable adventure.

Visitors might even have the chance to explore the historical buildings from the back of a local donkey cart.

Kruisfontein Adventures, established by a small group of local residents, was officially launched earlier this month in celebration of Tourism Month.

“The locals, who all grew up in the area, realised the potential of this under-utilised piece of land and approached the Kouga Municipality for funding to clean the area, as well as to develop it into a fully fledged business,” says Kouga Local Tourism Organisation (KLTO) Managing Director Esti Stewart.

Over the last eight months, they worked endlessly to clear the area of rubbish, open up footpaths, make river crossings more accessible and mark new routes through the kloof.

Apart from hiking, bird watching, and mountain biking, they invite people with their own horses and quad bikes to explore the area. Soon donkey cart rides, visiting the historical buildings in the area, will take tourists through the area.

They also dream of starting paint ball and other activities, especially for the local community to enjoy.

“A total of R80 000 was invested to date, with further funding available to empower these individuals to run Kruisfontein Adventures as a business,” says Stewart.

St Francis Tourism assisted with the ma-nagement of the project, while Peet Kemp and Hantie van der Westhuizen guided the group to where they are today.

The Kromme Enviro Trust (St Francis) compiled a comprehensive bird list, as well as identified the indigenous fauna and flora.

To get to Kruisfontein Adventures, take the road past Penny Pinchers outside Humansdorp, turn left onto the dirt road after Woodlands Dairy and continue for about 8km.
