No end to drought despite good rains

2018-08-23 06:00

KOUGA Municipality has cautioned residents against being casual about water usage after the recent good spells of rain as the drought situation across the region remains critical.

Executive Mayor Horatio Hendricks said although some of the towns had experienced good rainfall over the past two weeks, the rain didn’t fall where it mattered.

“Our dam levels remain critically low and continue to drop as little to no rain fell in the catchment areas.

“We appeal to residents not to be misled by the recent showers into thinking we are now out of danger. We do not know when we will have good rain in the catchment areas, so we need to save the water we have for it to last as long as is possible” he said.

By Tuesday a look at the three main supply dams in the area remained a cause for concern, with the Kouga Dam standing at an alarming 6,88%, Churchill at 15,94% and Impofu at 28,44%.

People who would like to drill boreholes are also reminded that they first need to contact the municipality’s Infrastructure and Engineering Department on 042 200 2200 so as to ensure that they comply with the requirements.

Water restrictions have been in place since December 2016 and the following prohibitions are still in place:

  • The use of hosepipes, sprinklers and drip systems connected to the municipal water supply
  • The watering of gardens, lawns and grassed areas with municipal water
  • The washing of paved areas, walls, roofs, buildings and similar structures, vehicles or other equipment with municipal water
  • The filling of swimming pools, paddling pools, fountains and ponds with municipal water
  • The connection of a hosepipe or any form of irrigation system to a tap supplying water from the municipal water supply system, except for fire-fighting purposes.
