Nuwe roetes vir Ysterman-kompetisie weens padwerke

DIE nuwe ystermanroete in die Baai sal “gewone” atlete ’n groter kans gee om die uitmergelende driekamp te kan voltooi.

Só meen Mariëtte Hattingh van Port Elizabeth wat die Afrika-ystermankompetisie se vorige roete voltooi het.

“Die nuwe fietsryroete het minder steil heuwels, wat amateur-atlete ’n groter kans gee om die afsnypunt van die fietsrydeel te haal.”

Ironman SA het die nuwe fietsry-en-drafroete vir die driekamp-kompetisie in ’n onlangse persverklaringg bekend gemaak.

Dié veranderings is genoodsaak weens padwerk in Nelson Mandelabaai wat moontlik met die oorspronklike roete sou oorvleuel.

Hoewel Hattingh reeds gesout is met die vorige roete, meen sy dat die nuwe roete “gelyke” grond vir deelnemers bied. “Die moeilike fietsroete is gewoonlik waar die sterk fietsryers hul voorsprong opmaak.

“Nou is dit ’n gelykmaker, en het gewone atlete ook ’n groter kans om die ystermankompetisie te voltooi.”

Alec Riddle, nóg ’n Baaise ­ystermandeelnemer, het opgelet dat die nuwe roete ’n groot deel van die oorspronklike heuwels by Lakefarm uitsny.

“Minder heuwels klink baie goed.

“Tog neem die nuwe roete ons al langs die kus af, wat deelnemers meer aan die wind sal blootstel,” sê Riddle.

Riddle en Hattingh stem saam dat die nuwe drafroete, wat die verlate deel van Marineweg (verby die Nelson Mandela Metropolitaanse Universiteit se agterste ingangshek) uitsny, ’n groot voordeel is.

“Die dooie deel, waar geen toeskouers is nie, kan behoorlik met ’n atleet se kop smokkel,” sê Riddle.

Hattingh sê die verandering is, “opwindend en sien ek baie uit na die nuwe uitdaging wat voorlê.” – CARA-LEE SCHEUN
