Open water swim kicks off at Marina

2016-10-20 06:00

THE open water swim season, which forms part of the EC Swim Series, is set to come into full swing with the first of seven events at Marina Martinique, Jeffreys Bay this Sunday.

Events on offer range from a gruelling 10km swim to an entry level 400m swim for those who are new to open water swimming.

According to event organiser, Brenton Wil-liams from the JBay Open Water Swim Club, the Marina Martinique canals are perfect for open water swimming.

“Fresh salt water is pumped continuously into the canals, and swimmers do not have to worry about tides, currents or even wildlife while swimming.”

Kouga Mayor, Elza Van Lingen, says it is pleasing to see tourism being boosted by events like the EC Swim Series.

“Jeffreys Bay is famous for the perfect waves that break along our coast and it is great to see a world class venue like Marina Martinique hosting one of the biggest open water swim events in South Africa.”

The EC Swim Series is organised by Zsports and sanctioned by Nelson Mandela Bay Aquatics. Swimmer can obtain national qualifying times recognised by Swim South Africa, at the swim series.
