Papiesfontein offers beach horse rides

PAPIESFONTEIN Beach Horse Trails have become so popular, that they are regarded as a must-do when visiting Jeffreys Bay.

The name Papiesfontein has become synonymous with exciting horse trails on a pristine beach just outside of Jeffreys Bay in the Eastern Cape. The unique combination of bush, river and beach makes this a very special outride.

Frankie and Esrè Lötter have been farming in this area since 1980 - running Papiesfontein Beach Horse Trails in addition to their cattle farm since 1996. Today they have more than 70 well-schooled and good-natured horses to choose from.

They breed their own horses and they use a cross-bred between the Boerperd and the Scottish Highland Pony. They have the only Scottish Highland Ponies in the country.

Experienced guides escort riders three times daily along a 13km circular route. The trail takes about two hours to complete; leading through beautiful fynbos coastal vegetation towards the Gamtoos River, with breathtaking views from the dunes and finally returning along a 6km stretch of deserted beach.

The trail provides magnificent views of the area and affords ample opportunity to spot a variety of bird species, tortoises and bushbuck, as well as marine life. Riders may see seals basking in the sun and the rare African Black Oystercatcher is always to be found near the Gamtoos River Mouth.

This outride is ideal for intermediate and advanced riders. Experienced riders can choose to explore the valley at their own pace without a guide.
