Plan to upgrade roads in pipeline

2017-03-09 11:39

THE Kouga Municipality is in the process to finalise a new maintenance plan for both gravel and tar roads in the region.

“Ideally we would like to build up a big enough revenue base to ensure enough money is available to surface at least one kilometre of road per ward per year,” says Kouga Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen.

“Given our current financial constraints, our immediate aim for the 2017/ 2018 financial year is 1km of road per year and not 15km.”

As part of the roads programme, the municipality will furthermore explore labour-intensive methods to surface and repair roads.

“This will assist us in determining to what extent the programme can be used to facilitate skills development and job creation,” says Van Lingen.

“We have, in the meantime, hired a grader to repair gravel roads in Humansdorp and access roads to Donkerhoek, which are to be included in the Kruisfontein housing project.”
