Residents encouraged to take a stand against abuse

2017-11-30 06:01

KOUGA residents are encouraged to volunteer their time and skills towards non-governmental organisations and community groups that support abused women and children.

This was the call from Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen as Kouga launched its 16 Days of Activism For No Violence Against Women and Children programme.

“Many of these organisations need help from the public and one can contribute in different ways, such as planting a garden at a shelter, sponsoring plastic tables and chairs for children at a clinic or joining an organisation as a counsellor,” said Van Lingen.

Gender-based violence and violence against children come in different forms and can be both emotional and physical. It includes insults, assault, robbery, rape and at worst, murder.

Some of the steps one can take in combating the abuse are:

  • Encourage silent female victims to talk about abuse and ensure that they get help.
  • Report child abuse to the police.
  • Encourage children to report bully behaviour to school authorities.
  • Men and boys are encouraged to talk about abuse and actively discourage abusive behaviour.
  • Seek help if you are emotionally, physically or sexually abusive to your partner and/or children. Call the Stop Gender Based Violence helpline (0800 150 150).
  • Talk to friends, relatives and colleagues to take a stand against abuse of women and children.
  • Try and understand how your own attitudes and actions might perpetuate sexism and violence.
  • Spread the message on social media using #16Days2017.
