Residents urged to register to vote

2016-03-03 06:00

RESIDENTS are encouraged to register to vote in the upcoming local government elections.

The first registration weekend will be on March 5 and 6.

The date of the election is still to be gazetted by President Jacob Zuma. The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is now offering new voters and those who have moved the opportunity to register to vote where they live.

Residents who have moved house, will have to re-regi-ster in order to vote in their ward.

Since the boundaries of some wards have also changed, residents may now reside in a different ward from pre- viously, without their having moved. Their voting station may be different too and they should re-register.

To find out where you are registered, SMS your ID number to 32810.

To register, or re-register, a prospective voter must be at least 16 years old, although they must be 18 to cast a vote.

Bring your ID or smart ID card or valid temporary ID certificate to your voting station to register.

Voting stations will be open from 08:00 to 17:00.

The Independent Electoral Commission encourages registered voters to check the status of their registration, as registered voters may have been impacted by changes to wards and/or voting district boundaries for 2016 elections and may need to re-register at their new voting station.
