Scam creates a stink

2017-04-27 06:02

JEFFREYS Bay residents have reportedly been threatened to pay over R1 000 for a service they did not ask for.

Residents have been warned to not let these informal compost dealers into their gardens.

This after a Jeffreys Bay resident was cheated out of hundreds of Rands when she was scammed into buying more fertiliser than she asked for.

Chantelle Nell says she was approached by three men in a white bakkie selling compost. They ensured her the compost has its own weed killer and that it would get rid of moles and snails.

“They were well-mannered and very persuasive - until they entered my garden,” says Nell.

“They quoted me R120 for six bags of compost, and then dropped 53 bags on the grass before I could say a word. They do as they want without permission and then demand an exuberant amount of money.

“They became very aggressive when I did not want to give them the R1 060 they demanded. They threatened and intimidated me to pay them or they would make sure I never walk again.

“In the end I paid them the money just to get rid of them.”

According to another resident, Melville Shaw, he was scammed about a month ago.

Police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart, said no complaints regarding the compost sellers had been reported to the Jeffreys Bay Police Station.
