Speed bumps installed at notorious Noorsekloof stretch

THREE speed humps have been erected at the top of Noorsekloof Road in Jeffreys Bay after yet another vehicle ploughed through the wall of a house situated on the bend just before the intersection at Seetuin Road.

“The municipality had rumble strips installed along this section of Noorsekloof almost a year ago after a series of similar accidents, but this recent incident clearly indicated that more needed to be done to force drivers to slow down,” Kouga Mayor Horatio Hendricks said.

“We cannot have a situation where residents fear being mowed down by a car when they are at home.”

The Mayor met with the affected residents, traffic officials and municipal technical staffers at the notorious stretch of road two weeks ago to discuss the best way forward.

He said the municipality had initially opted for rumble strips instead of speed humps because Noorsekloof is one of the main access routes used by fire and emergency vehicles.

“The recent accident, however, showed that there was sufficient justification to install speed humps.

“The risk to the lives of those living at the affected house was simply too great to leave the situation as is.”

Community Services Portfolio Councillor, Daniel Benson, responsible for traffic safety, urged drivers to respect the speed limits in town and not to drive under the influence of alcohol.

“The drivers who lost control of their vehicles along this section of road were almost all speeding, inebriated or both.

“Speed limits are there for a reason, to keep everyone safe. Each one of us has a responsibility and role to play in this regard,” he said.
