A young southern Antarctic fur seal is set to spend time in ‘rehab’ after the stricken animal was spotted close to Seal Point Lighthouse in Cape St Francis.

Hearing a distressed noise while walking his dog at around 07:30 on August 23, local resident Greg West took his four-legged back home before investigating where the sound came from.

Upon finding the anguished seal yearling, West phoned the local Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB), who arrived at the scene within minutes.

“After assessing the situation, we phoned our seal rehabilitation centre which operates out of Bayworld in Port Elizabeth,” says Kerry Bell-Cross, SANCCOB Marketing and Fundraising Coordinator.

“It was suggested that we get the pup to Port Elizabeth as soon as possible. We geared up all our equipment and after a bit of a struggle we managed to catch the seal and put him in our intensive care unit under a heat lamp. Once it was stabilised, we transported the pup to Port Elizabeth.”

According to Bell-Cross, it is unknown why the little fellow was stranded in Cape St Francis.

“The seal is one of six of southern Antarctic fur seal yearlings currently being rehabilitated at Port Elizabeth. Depending on their health, they will be released back into the ocean.”Report any stranded seals or any other stranded marine mammals to SANCCOB at 082 890 0707 or Bayworld at 072 679 4643.
