Sunshine group basks in self-made sunrays

2018-07-19 06:01

IT is generally true that one can’t spread sunlight without catching some of the rays oneself.

Such was the case for 14 ladies of the The Sunshine Group who were recently invited as special guests to attend the JBay Corona Open surfing contest.

They were thus rewarded for manufacturing the colourful flags used to enhance the merry Jeffreys Bay Recycling Project (JBRP) stand at the annual event. Not to be outdone, the ladies lived up to their name by donating part of their profit to Hankey’s Tharros Children’s home.

Transport for these sunshine girls was arranged by Island Vibe, and the group was fortunate enough to enjoy Jordy Smith winning the quarter finals. The weather and waves joined hands to make the day unforgettable for the ladies from Pellsrus and Tokyo Sexwale who had never had the privilege of atending the event before.

The Sunshine Group has a single mission: to improve pensioners’ quality of life by making them aware that the elderly need not spend their time reminiscing about the past and feeling the present is empty.

That is why they work as a group to socialise and take part in activities such as gardening, sewing (and even playing soccer) – all of which keep them youthful and aware that life can continue after years of hard work.

The Sunshine Group is also the lease holders of the Sunshine Service Centre where a number of activities take place. These include the weekly trading of the JBay Recycling Project, and allowing Meals on Wheels and the JBRP to use their premises.

The public is invited to use the services of the group, which is a registered NPO. The chairperson, Francis Faulkner, may be contacted at 071 087 2112.
