Take measures to save water

2018-02-22 06:00

ALL residents should adopt a water conservation approach that is a combination of reducing the amount of water used, conserving water better, recycling as much as possible and being sensitive to the many competing demands placed on this fragile resource.

Water storage tanks, like JoJo tanks, are an ideal solution which allow residents to actively contribute to minimising the use of water by harvesting rainwater and greywater.

When residents harvest rain at homes or at their offices, they not only cut out the need for expensive infrastructure, but they also collect water at exactly the point where they will be consuming it. Collecting rainwater from their own roofs, may also turn out to be the only way of ensuring an adequate water supply for growing populations, increased pressure on antiquated water supply systems and climate change.

Greywater is generated in homes every day. The basic sources are showers, baths, hand basins and washing machines. This greywater can be harvested using a JoJo tank greywater harvesting system. The greywater can be reused for non-potable water purposes: water gardens, wash cars and driveways and flush toilets.

Water saving tips

. Water footprint: manage your water footprint by determining your monthly water use and set goals to become more water efficient.

. Water leaks: fix all water leaks at home (even the slow dripping ones) and report public water leaks as soon as possible.

. Clothes washing: if garments are not physically dirty and smell okay, air them out and wear them again.

. Toilet flushing: Flush only after every second urination. Inserting a brick in your toilet cistern reduces the quantity of water used when flushing.

. Shaving (men): Use a shaver for a dry shave instead of the good old razor blade.

. Keeping clean: Don’t bath, shower instead.

. Cooking water: Use your used cooking water to flush the toilet or water plants.
