THE world’s best women surfers are set to ride the waves at the Corona Open JBay 2018 as part of the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour - the first time since 1996.

Changes in the 2018 WSL Championship Tour schedule will see the inclusion of the Women’s Championship Tour event at Jeffreys Bay from July 10 to 17. They will be preceded by the Men’s Championship Tour from July 2 to 13. Both these events will form part of the Corona Open JBay - the anchor event of the annual JBay Winterfest.

Apart from affording residents and visitors more surf viewing time, the additional five days of contest time will give the local economy a major boost with an influx of national and international visitors frequenting accommodation establishments, shopping malls and tourist attractions.

“We can’t wait to see what the world’s best women surfers will bring to the canvas of Jeffreys Bay next season, accompanying the men to the iconic South African wave,” says Sophie Goldschmidt, WSL CEO.

WSL Commissioner Kieren Perrow says, “The changes to the 2018 calendar are great and there will be more to come in future seasons as the sport continues to evolve. The process of discussing and implementing these changes with our stakeholders has been very collaborative.”

According to Brenton Williams, JBay Winterfest Coordinator, the annual JBay Winterfest will attract more feet into town with the expanded format of the Corona Open JBay. “This will in turn lead to an even bigger economic boost to the local economy during the quiet winter months.”
